Bitwise Dogecoin ETF Closure Ends 10-Month Run on NYSE Arca

What to Know

  • Oct. 14 is the last trading day for Bitwise’s Dogecoin ETF (BWOW) on NYSE Arca.
  • $318,000 in net inflows hit all U.S. Dogecoin ETFs in August 2026, per SoSoValue data.
  • DOGE traded at $0.084 on Sept. 11, down 2.6% after the closure news.
  • Bitwise holds $9 billion in client assets across more than 70 products.

The Bitwise Dogecoin ETF closure will take effect on Oct. 14, after just 10 months of trading. Bitwise filed the notice with the SEC on Sept. 10, 2026. Trading in BWOW will stop before NYSE Arca opens on Oct. 15.

Bitwise Dogecoin ETF Closure Timeline Explained

Bitwise filed the closure notice with the SEC on Sept. 10, 2026. The filing said BWOW shares will stop trading before the market opens. That happens before Oct. 15. Investors can still sell shares through the close of trading on Oct. 14.

Bitwise said it wants to optimize its product range. The goal is to meet evolving investor needs, the company said. Bitwise did not blame trading volume, assets under management, or fund fees. The Bitwise Dogecoin ETF closure announcement gave no other reason. BWOW began trading on Nov. 26, 2025. It gave investors exposure to Dogecoin without holding the token directly. Less than one year passed between launch and closure.

Full wind-down details appear in the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF SEC filing. Bitwise will convert BWOW’s Dogecoin holdings into cash on Oct. 14. New share creation stops before NYSE Arca opens on Oct. 15. Bitwise has coordinated the delisting with NYSE Arca. The fund’s share registration will be withdrawn once liquidation finishes.

The closure filing represents a routine business decision for asset managers. Fund sponsors regularly review products that fail to gain enough investor interest. Bitwise did not say whether other funds face similar reviews. The company only confirmed the Dogecoin ETF’s wind-down timeline in its filing.

What Happens to Investor Money?

Bitwise will calculate BWOW’s net asset value on Oct. 21. It will send cash to shareholders on Oct. 22, the SEC filing said. Investors who hold shares through liquidation do not need redemption requests. The fund’s holdings should be fully liquidated by Oct. 22 or soon after.

During the wind-down, BWOW will stop managing its portfolio toward its usual goal. Its Dogecoin position will simply be sold off. Cash will move automatically into shareholders’ brokerage accounts. Bitwise warned that the final payout may create a taxable event. Each investor’s tax bill depends on purchase price, holding period, and account type.

Investors who sell BWOW before Oct. 14 get the price at execution. Anyone holding shares through liquidation gets cash based on the Oct. 21 value. That value may differ from BWOW’s earlier trading price. Bitwise told investors to consult a tax adviser about their own situation.

Net asset value shows what one fund share is worth. It reflects the fund’s total assets minus its liabilities, divided by shares outstanding. Bitwise uses this figure to set the final cash payout. A taxable event means the IRS may treat the payout as a sale. Investors could owe capital gains tax depending on their cost basis.

Why Demand for Dogecoin ETFs Stayed Weak

BWOW drew close to $3 million in trading volume during its first week. Daily activity never returned to that level again.

Data from Dogecoin ETF net inflows August 2026 shows a different trend. All U.S. Dogecoin ETFs saw roughly $318,000 in net inflows in August. That reversed small outflows seen in July. The total still looked small next to Bitcoin and Ether fund flows.

Dogecoin funds generated about $300 million in total trading volume since launch. That trails other new crypto ETFs by a wide margin.

These numbers track trading activity, not new investor deposits. Trading volume measures the value of shares traded in a period. Net flows measure new money entering a fund after redemptions. BWOW launched under updated exchange rules for crypto products. Those rules can cut listing time to about 75 days for eligible funds. Issuers must still finish SEC registration, though. An easier listing path does not guarantee investor interest.

Crypto ETFs tied to single tokens carry higher risk than broad index funds. Newer listing rules opened the door for tokens like Dogecoin, Hyperliquid, and Zcash. Each of those tokens now has its own exchange-traded fund. Not every token attracts lasting investor demand once it lists. BWOW shows that a fast launch does not guarantee long survival.

  • Hyperliquid funds: $2.1 billion in trading volume
  • Zcash funds: about $1.5 billion in trading volume
  • Chainlink funds: about $680 million in trading volume
  • Dogecoin funds: about $300 million in trading volume

Risks Bitwise Warned Investors About

BWOW held one crypto asset, making it a nondiversified fund. Its prospectus warned that a Dogecoin price drop could hit the fund hard. A broader portfolio would spread that risk out more. Bitwise called DOGE a memecoin without a stated utility goal.

Bitwise said speculators make up a large share of Dogecoin’s users. Dogecoin’s unlimited supply could also weigh on its long-term price. The prospectus listed liquidity as another risk. Thin trading could make fund shares harder to sell at a fair price. That can widen the gap between share price and net asset value.

Custody, theft, blockchain failures, and regulatory change also made the risk list. Bitwise said some risks may not appear until blockchain systems see wider use.

A nondiversified fund puts most of its money in one asset. That structure can amplify losses when the asset falls sharply. Liquidity risk means shares may not trade easily at a fair price. Wide bid-ask spreads can cost investors money when they buy or sell. Bitwise listed these risks clearly in BWOW’s prospectus before launch.

Bitwise Still Bets on Crypto ETFs

Closing BWOW does not mean Bitwise is leaving crypto ETFs. The firm still manages about $9 billion in client assets. That spans more than 70 products, including ETFs and staking funds.

Bitwise’s lineup still covers Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, Chainlink, Avalanche, and Hyperliquid. The firm serves more than 5,500 private wealth teams and advisers. It also serves family offices and institutional investors, Bitwise said.

DOGE traded near $0.084 on Sept. 11, Dogecoin price September 2026 data shows. The token lost about 2.6% from its prior close. The drop came right after the liquidation announcement. Market data did not show the closure caused the price move.

The Dogecoin ETF charged a 0.34% management fee at launch. Bitwise waived that fee for a limited period at debut. Conditions for the waiver appeared in the fund’s launch materials.

Bitwise built its business across several types of crypto investment products. Its offerings range from single-asset ETFs to diversified index strategies. The firm also runs staking products that generate yield for token holders. Closing one small fund does not change that broader strategy. Bitwise continues to add new crypto products as regulators approve them.

Dogecoin ETFs launched fast under lighter listing rules. Investor demand never caught up. Bitwise’s decision shows how thin margins can end a product within a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (BWOW)?

BWOW is an exchange-traded fund from Bitwise that gave investors exposure to Dogecoin without holding the token directly. It began trading on NYSE Arca on Nov. 26, 2025, and will close on Oct. 14, 2026, according to Bitwise’s SEC filing.

Why is Bitwise closing the Dogecoin ETF?

Bitwise said it wants to optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs. The company did not name trading volume, assets under management, or fund fees as reasons, according to its official statement about the fund’s wind-down plan. Bitwise also confirmed it coordinated the delisting with NYSE Arca while keeping its wider crypto ETF lineup intact.

What happens to investors who still hold BWOW shares?

Bitwise will calculate the fund’s net asset value on Oct. 21, 2026, and distribute cash to remaining shareholders on Oct. 22. Investors do not need to file redemption requests, but the payout may count as a taxable event. Bitwise advised shareholders to consult a tax professional, since each investor’s final tax bill depends on their purchase price and holding period.

Dogecoin ETFs generated about $300 million in total trading volume since launch, far behind Hyperliquid funds ($2.1 billion), Zcash funds (about $1.5 billion), and Chainlink funds (about $680 million), based on market data cited in reports about the ETFs’ performance.
